Card reader shows offline

Confirm signal strength, SIM status, and network settings for cashless devices.

Overview

Check reader LEDs and signal strength in the portal. Verify the SIM is active and the APN is correct. If the reader is mounted inside a metal cabinet, move the antenna outside or use an external antenna kit.

Reseat MDB and power connections. Low voltage or a loose MDB cable often causes intermittent offline status. Reboot the reader and confirm it reconnects within a few minutes.

If the device remains offline, test it in a different machine to isolate whether the issue is the reader or the controller. Update firmware if an update is available.

Transaction verification

  • Confirm the reader shows the last successful transaction time.
  • Compare the payment portal timestamp with the machine vend log.
  • Check for repeated “declined” events that signal network issues.

Network and power checks

  • Verify RSSI/signal strength and SIM status in the portal.
  • Inspect the MDB cable for pin damage or loose seating.
  • Measure power at the reader if voltage drops under load.

Dispute prevention

  • Keep a visible refund policy and contact method on the machine.
  • Log offline events and resolution times for each location.
  • Proactively test transactions after maintenance.
